In order to get a learner’s licence, you must breeze through a multiple choice-based test (named Knowledge Test) conducted by Insurance Corporation of British Columbia.
After passing the ICBC practice knowledge test followed by a vision test, you will obtain a Class 7L licence (learner’s licence) which is valid for 24 months and allows you to drive with a qualified supervisor until you turn 19.
To graduate with a Novice licence (N licence), you must complete 12 months as a learner driver, and then pass the Class 7 road test i.e., a practical driving test. Class 7 licence will have restrictions such as driving with a supervisor until you turn 19.
For a full licence, you must finish 24 months as a Class 7 driver, and then apply for a Class 5 road test. Once you pass this test, a Class 5 licence will be issued which gives you access to drive multiple vehicles like motorcycle, car, heavy vehicle with tow, etc.
It is also possible to apply for a full licence with only 18 months of experience as a Class 7 driver if you have taken an ICBC-approved (GLP) driving course.
1. Learner’s Licence – Class 7L knowledge test + Vision screening test; minimum age is 16 years
