How Does This Work
G1 practice tests are comprised of 40 multiple choice questions, 20 for the road signs and 20 for the road rules. Practicing these tests can help identify your errors and work on your shortcomings thus increasing your confidence.

What is G1 Test?
G1 test is a knowledge test for passing the first level of the Ontario graduated licencing process. The test is based on the MTO official driver’s handbook guide and consists of 40 multiple choice questions related to road rules and road signs which you must pass with 80% of score to pass.
After clearing the test, you can obtain your G1 driving licence that allows you to take driving lessons and drive any car, small truck, or van with an eligible G class driver accompanying you on the passenger seat.
You can progress to the G2 level by passing a road test after completing 12 months as a G1 driver. Again after 12 months, you can take the final road test to obtain a G licence. The whole procedure to get a Class G licence can take up to two years.
Class G Graduated Licencing Procedure
G1 Licence: 16 years minimum age + pass the vision test.
G2 Licence: 12 months driving (accompanied by a qualified driver) + road test.
Class G Licence: 12 months of restricted driving + final road test.
Number of Topics and G1 Passing Score
There are 40 questions appearing in the knowledge test. In order to clear the test, you must get 16 correct answers out of 20 in each section.
G1 Licence: Road signs – 20 questions.
G2 Licence: Rules of the road – 20 questions.
Types of Driving Licence in Ontario
The minimum age required to apply for a learner’s permit is 16 years old. You must drive under specified restricted conditions until you turn 18.
Class A: Allows to drive any tractor-trailer combination, along with Class D and G vehicles.
Class B: Allows to drive all school buses, and Class C, D, E, F, and G vehicles.
Class C: Allows to drive all regular buses, and Class D, F, and G vehicles.
Class D: Allows to drive motor vehicles exceeding 11,000 kgs of gross weight, any truck, or a truck with trailer not exceeding 4,600 kgs, and Class G vehicles.
Class E: Allows Class F, G vehicles, and school buses not exceeding 24 passenger capacity.
Class F: Allows to drive regular buses not exceeding 24 passenger capacity and ambulances. Can also drive Class G vehicles.
Class G: Allows to drive any car, van, mini truck, or a towing vehicle not exceeding 11,000 kgs. Class G licence is again divided into G1 and G2 categories.
Class M: Allows to drive all types of motorcycles including motorbike, scooter, or moped. It is sub-categorised into M1, M2, M & M2 with L and M conditions.
G1 licence is the basic licence that allows you to drive cars and similar vehicles given you have a Class G driver monitoring you. With a G2 licence, you can drive alone.
The G1 licence validity expires within 5 years. G2 licence too, expires within this period so it is better to get a Class G licence within 5 years or you must retake the test.
