Parking and Stopping Rules
- 1/24If you see a stop sign ahead
You must stop where indicated. If there is no stop line, you must stop before the crosswalk or sidewalk to ensure you have a clear, unobstructed view of all cross traffic.
Upon reaching a railway crossing with flashing signal lights
Flashing signal lights indicate an approaching train, so you must bring your vehicle to a complete stop at least five meters away from the nearest gate. Remain stopped until the lights cease flashing and the gate is fully raised.
If a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing
When a school bus displays its upper alternating red lights, it means children are getting on or off the bus. You are legally required to stop your vehicle at least 20 meters away from the bus and wait until the lights stop flashing.
At a pedestrian crossover
You must always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians who are walking or waiting to cross. It is your responsibility to stop and remain stopped until they have completely cleared the roadway.
Driving on a downhill slope with a manual transmission
This technique, known as engine braking, helps you control your vehicle speed more effectively and reduces the risk of your brakes overheating.
Stopping at an unmarked railway crossing
Even if a railway crossing does not have flashing signals or gates, you must still be cautious. Stop your vehicle, look carefully in both directions, and listen for any approaching trains before safely proceeding.
If a school crossing guard displays a stop sign
When a school crossing guard is present and displays a stop sign, you must immediately stop. Remain completely stopped until the crossing guard and all pedestrians have safely cleared the entire roadway.
When facing a stopped school bus on a divided road with a median
Vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus or approaching it from behind, are required to stop. Vehicles on the opposite side of the median do not need to stop, but should still exercise caution.
If you become trapped on a railway crossing
If your vehicle ever becomes trapped on a railway crossing, your absolute first priority is safety. You must immediately get everyone out of the vehicle and move quickly to a safe place away from the tracks.
Approaching a pedestrian crossover with flashing yellow lights
It is a clear warning that pedestrians may be present or are about to cross. You are legally obligated to yield the right-of-way to them and wait until they are safely across the street.
If you need to stop on a road
If you find it necessary to stop your vehicle on a road for any reason, always pull over to the shoulder. Stopping on the shoulder helps ensure that your vehicle does not obstruct the flow of traffic or create a hazard for other drivers.
Parking on a curve or hill with limited visibility
It is illegal to park your vehicle on any curve or hill where you have less than 125 meters of clear view in both directions. Parking in such low visibility locations significantly increases the risk of a collision.
When parking near a fire hydrant
To ensure that emergency services can quickly and easily access a fire hydrant when needed, you must park your vehicle at least five meters away from it.
While parking facing downhill
When parking on a downhill slope, you must always turn your front wheels sharply toward the curb. This prevents your vehicle from rolling uncontrollably into traffic if its brakes were to fail.
Before pulling away from a roadside stop, the required action is
Before you begin to pull away from a roadside stop and re-enter the flow of traffic, it is crucial to check your mirrors and do a shoulder check to ensure no vehicles are approaching from behind.
To safely open your door next to traffic
This involves reaching for the door handle with your far hand, which naturally forces you to turn your body and helps you spot any approaching cyclists or cars.
When parking on a hill without a curb
This ensures that if your vehicle were to roll unintentionally, it would steer away from the road and not into traffic.
Parking near a crosswalk or intersection
It is illegal to park your vehicle within six meters of any crosswalk or intersection. Parking too close can block sightlines and endanger both pedestrians and other road users.
When parking near a stop sign or traffic signal
You must park at least six meters away from any stop sign or traffic signal, as parking closer can obstruct the visibility of these crucial signals for other drivers.
When parking close to a railway crossing
For the safety of both road traffic and trains, you are strictly prohibited from parking your vehicle within 15 meters of the nearest rail of any railway crossing.
Parking on bridges or inside highway tunnels
Parking your vehicle on any bridge or inside a highway tunnel is always illegal. These locations are critical for continuous traffic flow and lack safe stopping areas, making stopping strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
If you see a curb painted yellow or red
You must not park your vehicle where these markings are present, as they indicate no-parking zones established for safety or traffic management.
When parallel parking next to a curb
Being this close to the curb ensures your vehicle is properly aligned within the parking space and does not impede traffic flow.
After parking a standard transmission vehicle downhill
When parking a standard transmission vehicle on a downhill slope, in addition to setting the parking brake, you should leave the vehicle in reverse gear. This provides an important extra layer of resistance against any unintended rolling, should the parking brake unexpectedly fail.
